Prison Island
Adventure for all ages

The Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island is located in the western part of Zanzibar and takes around 25 minutes by local boat riding from the Stone Town beach.

In 1893 the former British prime minister of Zanzibar purchased the island and built a prison complex on it but was neve used as such. Today the building serves as a lovely guesthouse for travelers, where you'll be able to relax and enjoy magnificent views.

The island’s main attraction is the popular Giant Tortoises, who can live up to 200 years. You will be visiting the giant tortoises' reserve, where you will admire, pet, and even feed these magnificent, ancient and peaceful creatures. In this tour, you will get a chance to explore and learn the history of these beautiful creatures and also about Prison Island itself.

Four specimens of Aldabra giant tortoises were a gift from the governor of Seychelles in 1919 and they found Prison Island a great environment to bred freely. Today, many tortoises are welcoming you, and the first settlers are still among them. There is also a nursery for baby tortoises, where you can see baby tortoises of different ages. A great encounter for everyone, especially for kids. Round up this great day with some snorkeling around the coral reefs, admire colorful fish, many beautiful starfish, and picturesque seashells and relax on the white sandy beach. Upon your return admire the breathtaking view of Stone Town, the bay, and the archipelago.
